How to Choose a Hypnotist

Today, hypnosis has become a well-respected tool for helping people through all types of difficult situations. For example, hypnosis is successfully used for people who want to stop smoking, lose weight, gain confidence, lose inhibitions, and more. If you have been trying to overcome something but with one failed attempt after another, then you should consider hypnosis. Although the exact way in which hypnosis works is not known, this tool is not frightening but actually, a very, relaxing way to improve quality of life.

Two factors are essential for hypnosis to work. First, you have to be open and willing to try. If you go to be hypnotized and you already have your mind made up that it will not work, then chances are you are right. Therefore, you have to look at hypnosis as a valuable opportunity for getting past hurdles, believing it will work. Second, unless you plan to use self-hypnosis, you have to work with a reputable hypnotist or hypnotherapy. Just as with any professional, not all are the same. In this case, you want someone who truly understands this tool and has the skill and ability to use it for your gain.

The challenge of finding a professional hypnotist or hypnotherapist is that in most states, hypnosis is not regulated. For this reason, the majority of responsibility falls back on you to ask questions and conduct research. Now, a certified hypnotist would have completed 200 or more hours of training in the art of hypnosis. However, while the training in this area is extensive, he or she does not have any type of professional healthcare training.

On the other hand, licensed healthcare professionals can practice hypnotherapy. Typically, this would include social workers, doctors, and psychologists. With this, the healthcare professional would complete his or her medical degree and then add hypnosis in as a part of the training. Whether you choose a certified hypnotist or licensed hypnotherapist is really up to you but just as you would research a family doctor or dentist, they too should be carefully screened. To do this, you should be honest and open, asking very specific questions pertaining to the following:

  • Is the healthcare professional licensed in the state where he or she is practicing
  • Does the professional have specific training in a field such as social work, medicine, dentistry, or psychology
  • How many years has the professional been practicing hypnosis and/or medicine
  • What organizations does the professional belong to
  • What school and/or university did the professional attend
  • Where did the professional complete his or her internship, residency program, or both

In most cases, choosing a trained hypnotist or hypnotherapist that is trained in this field is safe. Typically, these professionals care about your improvement almost as much as you do. However, take the time to ask these questions, request references, check the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) to see if there are any unresolved complaints, and most importantly, follow your instinct. Obviously, you want a hypnotist or hypnotherapist that you feel comfortable working with and someone that can easily gain your confidence. This combination is what will allow you to receive suggestions and overcome your particular issue.
